VISION / The Digital Divide
Technology is a big part of today’s world and a key to better jobs and stronger communities. But not everyone has the same access to technology, creating what’s called the "digital divide".
The gap can exacerbate existing inequalities, limiting access to essential services, education, and economic opportunities for disadvantaged groups, particularly in rural or underserved areas.
This gap in access often leads to fewer opportunities for those in underserved areas. According to AT&T, 70% of Black participants said they felt underprepared for jobs that require digital skills.

VISION / Bridge the Divide
Disconnected workers, including those without internet access or digital skills, face significant barriers to participating in an economy increasingly reliant on technology.
In 2018, disconnected workers in rural NC constituted 40% of the potential workforce.
Today, the "digital divide" remains a critical issue, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas and impacts every aspect of life—education, healthcare, and, most notably, employment opportunities.
Approximately 15% of North Carolinians lack access to high-speed internet, with more than one million households unable to afford, access, or effectively use modern digital tools.
Closing the divide is essential for fostering inclusive growth and ensuring equitable participation in a digital society.
We are working to close this gap.
