VISION / The Digital Divide
Technology is a big part of today’s world and a key to better jobs and stronger communities. But not everyone has the same access to technology, creating what’s called the "digital divide".
The gap can exacerbate existing inequalities, limiting access to essential services, education, and economic opportunities for disadvantaged groups, particularly in rural or underserved areas.
Closing the divide is essential for fostering inclusive growth and ensuring equitable participation in a digital society.
This gap in access often leads to fewer opportunities for those in underserved areas. According to AT&T, 70% of Black participants said they felt underprepared for jobs that require digital skills.

OUR VISION is to close the gap and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or location.
In 2018, disconnected workers in rural NC constituted 40% of the potential workforce.
Today, the "digital divide" remains a critical issue, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas.
Approximately 15% of North Carolinians lack access to high-speed internet, with more than one million households unable to afford, access, or effectively use modern digital tools.
This divide impacts every aspect of life—education, healthcare, and, most notably, employment opportunities.
Disconnected workers, including those without internet access or digital skills, face significant barriers to participating in an economy increasingly reliant on technology.

Milestones and our future in economic empowerment
LIVING THE DREAM!
In 2018, GROW functioned as a personal project with business goals.
One of the proudest accomplishments has been a partnership with Career Step to offer affordable, high-level training.
Since 2019, this collaboration has provided our residents with FREE online career training and the opportunity to develop in-demand skills within three to six months, significantly increasing their employability in higher-paying jobs.
Our BIGGEST accomplishment was obtaining GROW’s first commercial business location in 2023.
After operating home-based for 5 years, it was a pivotal milestone, marking the realization of a 12-year "dream" and now we are growing a transformative support system for our community.
In January 2025, GROW will become a Senior Community Service Employment Program training site. SCSEP is a federally funded program managed by the AARP Foundation, which connects low-income adults 55 years and older with meaningful training opportunities.
